About IMA Blood Bank

IMA Blood Bank Complex and Research Center is a joint project of IMA, Thrissur and the District Panchayat, Thrissur under People’s Plan Programme. The project is run by a core group of eminently qualified and experienced doctors of Thrissur. An organization called Janakeeya Samithy (Arogyam), Thrissur has been registered under Charitable Societies Act to establish and run the center. The complex is a state-of- the art Blood Bank institute with facilities for component separation, Transfusion Wards, Exhibition and Library facilities.

The beneficiaries of this Blood Bank Complex will be a population of over seven million, spread over three districts of central Kerala; more than 60% of them economically disadvantaged. Even though processing cost of the blood will generally be charged from the user, this economically disadvantaged section will be given subsidy over even completely free service.

Geographical Coverage

IMA BBC & RC is situated at Thrissur, the geographical center of Kerala. The immediate beneficiaries of this facility will be the people of three districts i.e. Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram; the approximate area of which will be about 100 square kilometers and the total population over seven million people.

Even though the processing cost of the blood is intended to be charged from the user, a great part of the population will have to be given subsidy or even free services. This section is estimated to comprise about 60% of the population; i.e. over four million people. In addition to this, since the facilities available at this center hardly exist anywhere else in Kerala, the whole population of the state will be the long-term beneficiaries of this project.

Promoters

This Blood Bank Complex is being managed chiefly by the Thrissur branch of the Indian Medical Association (IMA). IMA is the largest NGO of doctors in India with over 1500 branches located all over the country. It was established way back in 1928. Its main involvement is in the continuing medical education of doctors and the health related problems of the people. This project has been approved and is being helped by the Thrissur District Panchayat. This is essentially a people’s project, to be established and run with contributions from individuals, institutions, funding agencies, etc.
